The community is invited to learn more about the Stiles Student Housing Project, proposed to be built between Bancroft Way and Durant Avenue, east of Dana Street, south of the UC Berkeley central campus.
The proposed new mixed use building would replace program space for the existing Stiles Hall (2400 Bancroft Way) at the project site, as well as develop ground floor retail. Existing surface parking for UCB affiliates at the site would be replaced by the new building and related landscape improvements. The primary purpose of the project is to provide incoming first year students state-of-the-art dormitory style residential accommodations. Accordingly, the project is planning to house approximately 770 students in 19 “pods” (distinct communities) of 40 students each, housed primarily in double-occupancy units. Each pod will include a dedicated resident advisor, study lounge, and a pair of gender inclusive bathroom facilities.
Construction on the new Stiles Student Housing Project is proposed to begin in the winter of 2016, with proposed occupancy of the new building by fall 2018.
Building design and land use program is guided by the City of Berkeley Southside Plan as well as the UC Berkeley 2020 Long Range Development Plan and Physical Design Framework. The University proposes to maximize the development potential of the site by constructing an eight story building. The proposed height and density of the building would mediate between the Telegraph Commercial Subarea at the Bancroft frontage east of the site, and the University’s nine-story residential units south of the project site, consistent with goals of the Southside Plan to build a more cohesive district.
The University would enter into a ground lease with a American Campus Communities (ACC), a university housing development company, in order to construct and operate, in conjunction with UC Berkeley student housing programs, the new 183,500 GSF project.
The design team will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about the project.
More information will be provided at the meeting; in the interim, questions can be directed to the campus planning office at firstname.lastname@example.org, or phone Jennifer McDougall at (510) 642-7720.
